Flex Time ACtivities

Gym Club- Gym club is located in the Gymnasium, here we decide which sports we play for the duration of your flex period. For example, basketball and volleyball, we will split the courts between both and it will be a great time. Other sports we can potentially play are soccer, football and more.

D&D- The D&D Club is a place to adventure through epic campaigns, make friends, and share laughs around the table. We also run a casual study group on the side, so you can roll dice and stay on top of schoolwork.

Current Events Club- Current Events is a FLEX club focused on discussing and learning about local news, global issues, and pop culture. Each meeting, we present information on a handful of selected current events and discuss them as a group, exploring different viewpoints, using critical thinking skills, and conducting research to answer the “why’s” and “how’s” behind some of the most pressing news stories and relevant issues throughout the world today.

Arts & Crafts- Arts and Crafts is a club where your inner artist can be unleashed, its calm relaxing environment invites space for creativity to flourish. We have student teachers every club day who teach their certain style, origami always, drawing prompts, and more.

Board Games Club- Board Games Club is a really fun way to hang out with your friends and play your favorite games. For example some of the games we usually play are Wavelength, Uno no Mercy, and more!

Ping-Pong Club - Just like chess boxing, we are mixing ping pong and chess. Alternate games of chess and ping pong, each 2-5 mins. If one of the games is won, then the game of “ping pawn” is won. You can also just play chess or ping pong if you would like. There is also access to foosball and ice hockey at the student center.

Golf Club - we have little “courses” around the campus with holes to hit into. We use foam balls and real golf clubs. They usually last 5-10 minutes per course and we always make new courses to play on. We also go actual golfing on a real course with real balls but we do that not during Flex Time.

CSF (California Scholarship Federation) grades 10-12 Ms. Aaron

The California Scholarship Federation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to recognize and encourage academic achievement and community service among middle and high school students in California. Today’s chapters continue to foster the recognition, motivation, and education of academically talented students. Chapter memberships promote the CSF ideal of service to their communities. Membership is for one semester, and membership drives are held each semester within established periods dictated by the State bylaws. CSF applications will be available on January 13, 2025. A current high school transcript or report card must be printed and attached. The club will hold an application workshop at the first meeting on 1/24.

Key Club Ms. Aaron

Key Club is a student-led, high school organization. Our members make the world a better place through service. In doing so, we grow as individuals and as leaders by answering the call to lead, summoning the courage to engage, and developing the heart to serve.

Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Principal Davenport

FBLA inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences

Debate - Ms.Court, faculty adviser

High school debate is a collaborative activity that involves researching, preparing, and presenting arguments on a controversial topic, known as a resolution. With help from a debate coach, students will learn skills to compete in tournaments to present the case on their topic.

Model UN - Ms.Court

Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and its other multilateral bodies where students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health, and more. Through public speaking and research, students will enrich their knowledge of international affairs.

What is the CA Seal of Civic Engagement?

The California State Seal of Civic Engagement, marked by a gold seal on the transcript of diplomas, recognizes high school graduates who have demonstrated excellence in civic engagement by working towards and advocating for meaningful solutions to a community or social problem; quality reflection of student activities and growth; and have peer and mentor testimony of relevant student civic activities.

Why is it important?

The NJUHSD Seal of Civic Engagement (NJUHSD SoCE) is an opportunity to enable all students, particularly those from marginalized communities, to have relevant, rigorous, and engaging learning opportunities. Such opportunities would enable students to understand that each student matters and belongs in our democratic society and that they have the right and responsibility to use their learning and their skills to make the world, and their community, a better place.

How is it achieved?

Beginning with the class of 2026

To qualify for the Seal of Civic Engagement, NJUHSD juniors and seniors need to meet the following requirements:

Passing grades
C or better in at least two history/social science courses

Complete Civic Engagement Project/Activities that have:

Identified a meaningful issue that you want to address and/or fix
Built awareness of the issue, discussed ideas with others, and advocated for effective solutions
Taken action to engage with key decision-makers to address the problem
Reflect on how you have grown, what impact you had, and how you could improve in a Student Reflection (written essay, interview/conversation, video, or presentation)
Letter of recommendation from a peer and your mentor (form will be provided).
